Lettering

painting text

Are you looking for something more for your walls than just a colour, wallpaper, or a painting? Text is personal, fun, and decorative. How about a lullaby in the nursery or a poem or quote in the kitchen? But bear in mind, painting text on a wall is precise work, so have patience.

step-by-step plan

1. Choose your text. Pay attention to the space you have, as there is often a cabinet or bed placed in front of a wall, and it would be a shame if your text were hidden. Also, it is easier to work with larger letters.
2. Create a layout. You can play with fonts, font size, colour, and layout in Word. If you want more options, you should use programs with more possibilities, such as Photoshop or InDesign.
3. Make the stencil. There are several ways to get a stencil for your wall painting. You can send your design to a vinyl lettering supplier and have the letters cut out into stencil film. This film is easy to apply to the wall, works quickly, and produces a nice result. Do you have a steady hand and lots of patience? Then you can also use a projector. Project the text onto the wall and trace the outlines of the letters on the wall with a pencil. Then fill them in with your chosen wall paint colour.
4. Preparations for a good result. Before you start, ensure the wall is clean and grease-free. Then it is helpful to measure where the text should go on the wall using a tape measure and mark it. Use a spirit level to ensure the text is straight on the wall. If you are working with a projector, you can get started. If you are using stencil film, follow the instructions provided.
5. The real work; you can begin. For interior walls that have been plastered and painted, you can simply use fairf wall paint. You usually need to apply several layers on top of each other to get opaque letters. You can use a paint roller or brush for this.
6. Finished painting and used film? Then carefully peel the film off the wall before the paint is dry. With both stencil film and a projector, it may be that not every letter is perfectly sharp. This is particularly difficult if the surface is uneven. You can fix this by touching up the letters with a fine brush. The paint must be completely dry for this.
7. When painting is done, you can wipe the residues from the brush and rollers with an old cloth. Then rinse them with water and dry the brushes further with a cloth. Once the brushes and rollers are completely dry, you can store them until your next adventure.

Finished painting? Keep leftover paint tightly sealed and frost-free, following the product instructions, for your next project or a small touch-up. Do not pour paint or rinse water containing paint down the drain. Follow the product label and local collection rules for leftover paint, tool cleaning and empty packaging.
